A Moving Empire

One of Newport’s most successful 19th century entrepreneurs, Benjamin F. Burton, arrived in Newport from Connecticut. He would establish the “Original Express” company, one of the earliest Black-owned businesses operating in various forms at 4 Travers Block along Bellevue Avenue. During the summer resort season, he also operated a baggage transfer business, transporting luggage from the steamships along the waterfront to the summer estates along Bellevue Avenue.
